Why onion makes us cry

Here is the explanation. The skin cell of onion has 2 layers. One part contains the allinases enzyme, and the other contains sulfide enzyme. When we are mincing the onion, the cell brokes so both of the enzymes go out and are splashed out to the air. The allinases enzyme decomposites the sulfide enzyme to sulfonat acid. This acid is not stable so that it metamorphs to amino sulfokside gas. This gas hits the eyes and reacts with the liquid at retina and it produces soft sulfur acid. This soft sulfur acid irritates the nerve at retina. The irritation hurts our eyes so that tears come out as a response to lessen pain.

So, what can we do to lessen the pain? There are some ways. When you are mincing the onion, just try to keep your distance to the onion when mincing it. It’s not good to get too close because the gas will easily get to your eyes. The other ways is by washing your hands and the onion. It makes the sulfokside amino gas reacts with the water at our hands and the onion. Sometimes washing your face can also be helpful to lessen the irritation. Breathing slowly through your mouth. If you are breathing fast and through your nose, it will make the gas get to your eyes faster. But remember, don’t rub your eyes if you get the irritation, it will just make it worse. If it doesn’t help, try to wash your eyes, you can use soap if necessary.
